Until mid-2026 the cistern was run by the İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality, which had restored it and reopened it in 2022 with a day session, an evening session and a foreign-visitor fare far above the domestic one. On 2 June 2026 it was evacuated and transferred to the General Directorate of Foundations, a national body, and closed while the new administration set up ticketing. It reopened free over the weekend of 6–7 June and returned to paid entry on Monday 8 June.
Since then: no tariff, no published hours, no statement about the night session, on any official page reachable from our network on 2 September 2026. The operator's former site, yerebatan.com, does not respond to us at all.
How to buy anyway
Two workable options. Turn up and pay at the desk, by card or İstanbulkart, accepting whatever is on the board that day — the cistern is three minutes from the Hagia Sophia, so it costs nothing to look.
Or book a reseller listing that states its own price and carries free cancellation. That moves the uncertainty onto the seller: you know the number before you pay, and you get it back if the site turns out to be closed. What not to do is budget from a figure quoted on a blog, because those figures belong to a tariff that no longer applies.
