Istanbul museums beyond the famous monuments are cheap, quiet and mostly overlooked: the Archaeological Museums at €15 hold the Alexander Sarcophagus, and the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts at €17 holds carpets nobody else has. The two that earn a slot
Istanbul Archaeological Museums, €15, inside the Topkapı complex through the Gülhane gate: three museums in one — the main archaeology building with the Alexander Sarcophagus and the Sidon royal necropolis, the Museum of the Ancient Orient with Hittite and Babylonian material, and the Tiled Kiosk of 1472, the oldest building in the complex. Two hours, and almost never crowded.
Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts, €17, on the Hippodrome in a sixteenth-century vizier's palace: carpets that exist nowhere else, Qur'anic manuscripts, and an ethnographic floor on nomadic life. Ninety minutes. Both take the Museum Pass, and both close their doors to pass holders at 18:45.
