What is at street level
The Galata Bridge is the anchor: fishermen along the upper deck, fish restaurants below it, and a constant traffic of ferries at the piers on either side. West of it the waterfront runs to Galataport, the cruise terminal, and its promenade.
Inland, the streets between Karaköy and the tower hold the city's densest run of bakeries, coffee roasters and small restaurants — this is where breakfast is worth a detour. The Kılıç Ali Paşa hamam and the Ottoman Bank building sit within the same few blocks.
The climb, and how to avoid it
Galata is built on a hill and the tower is at the top of it. From the waterfront it is a ten-minute walk up stepped lanes — pleasant once, tiring with luggage.
The alternatives: the Tünel, a short funicular from Karaköy up to the bottom of İstiklal, which has been running since 1875 and takes ninety seconds; or the F1 funicular from Kabataş to Taksim, if you are coming from the tram line. Both are one İstanbulkart ride.
