Sultanahmet
Sultanahmet is the old city: a low hill above the Sea of Marmara holding the Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapı and the Basilica Cistern within ten minutes of one another. What is inside the quarter
The spine is Divan Yolu, the Roman road that became the Ottoman processional route and now carries the T1 tram. North of it: the Hagia Sophia, the Topkapı gate and Gülhane Park. South of it: the Blue Mosque, the Hippodrome with its obelisk and Serpent Column, and the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts in the İbrahim Paşa Palace. Under it: the Basilica Cistern.
Walk five minutes downhill in any direction and the tourism thins out fast — toward Kumkapı for fish restaurants, toward Cankurtaran for quiet guesthouse streets, toward Çemberlitaş for the tram and the hamam.
Where not to eat, and where to
The restaurants with photographs of the food outside and a man inviting you in are the ones to walk past; that is not snobbery, it is the pricing. The same plate of köfte costs half as much two streets back and considerably more if it arrives with a free 'welcome' salad you did not order.
Better: the lokantas around Çemberlitaş at lunchtime, where you point at trays; the fish restaurants of Kumkapı in the evening, which are touristy but honestly so; or the tram to Karaköy and Kadıköy, which is what most people staying here end up doing. Where to eat has the wider picture.
