Beşiktaş and Ortaköy
Ortaköy Istanbul photographs are all the same photograph: a small nineteenth-century mosque at the water's edge with a suspension bridge soaring behind it. Beşiktaş: the working half
A market square, a covered fish market with restaurants around it, a dense grid of cheap places to eat aimed at students rather than visitors, and one of the busiest ferry interchanges on the European shore. It is not pretty in the postcard sense and it is one of the most useful places in Istanbul to be based: ferries to two Asian-side destinations, buses up the Bosphorus, and a ten-minute walk to Dolmabahçe.

Ortaköy: the photograph, and the rest of it
The Büyük Mecidiye Mosque sits on its own small quay directly beneath the 15 July Martyrs Bridge, and the composition — baroque mosque, steel span, water — is the reason everyone comes. Go early or at sunset; midday flattens it.
Behind the waterfront, the square is a run of kumpir stalls (baked potatoes loaded with anything you point at) and waffle stands, which is either a charm or a warning depending on your view of tourist food. The Sunday craft market fills the lanes. Buses run along the shore road from Beşiktaş in about ten minutes; on a good day the walk is nicer.

How do I get to Ortaköy?
Bus or a twenty-minute walk along the shore from Beşiktaş, which is itself a ferry ride from Karaköy, Eminönü or Kadıköy. The T1 tram does not run here.
